Did I ever tell you about the time I went to Nervous, New Mexico? The coffee consumption there was triple the national average. Now, given the epidemic of Meth, coffee is no longer the problem. I remember the furtive glances of people with darting eyes. A sort of coffee based paranoia that gripped the town. People there spoke with the cadence of people from Brooklyn NY where I was born. Sentences come out like long words. Yagoin’tathefreakinmovieornot???

Nervous New Mexico should have been pretty laid back like most small western towns. Of course, its proximity to Hobbs,NM would be enough to make anybody shaky. On my first road trip as a musician, I insisted our entire caravan detour at least 25 miles out of its way to see if there really was a Hobbs. Later, on another road trip with a Dixieland Band, I got fired in Hobbs. So I know for sure it’s there. Thank god I wasn’t in Nervous, NM.
